May Camera Club Competitions

Two competitions in the month of May.

 

First up, Mawson Lakes Photography Club (MLPC) had a prints competition, and the subjects were Black & White, Scapes and Open.

 

My best results for this competition were:

 

Doing the Seagull Shuffle - 9/10 - Honour 52 in 2025 - 12: What's for lunch?
Golden Sunset Largs Bay Jetty - 8/10 - Merit 52 in 2025 - 44: Sunset Golden Sunset - 9/10 - Honour Up to the Heavens - 9/10 - Honour Sunset Stroll - 10/10 - Top Image

Needless to say, I was very pleased with my results!

 

Next up the competition for PACC - The subjects were Architecture & Open

 

My best results were in the Open prints category:

March Camera Club Competitions

Both of my camera clubs held competition this month.

 

Port Adelaide Camera Club (PACC) Set Subject was 'Street Photography' plus 'Open'.

 

My best results this month for PACC were in the 'Street Photography' section:

 

Right Place, Right Time - scored 9 out of 10 - Merit

August Camera Club Competition Results

There was only one competition for PACC this month.

PACC - Architecture & Open

Clockwise:  Sunset Stroll (9), Largs Bay Sunset (7), Angles & Curves (9), SAHMRI Foyer (9)

Another example of two different judges giving the same image a markedly different score - Sunset Stroll received a 6 at MLPC (which is a low score), whereas at PACC, it received a 9 and placed First!

Thanks to my BFF Joy, we went for a bit of a photo walk around Port Adelaide for the 'doors & windows'.

Reasonably pleased with my results with a 9 out of 10 for my 'Green Door' image (bottom right).

Out and About Adelaide - Part II

This is part of the new Adelaide Railway Station entrance ...... well new in March 2021, but I had never been there before!

Out and about Adelaide

I did a Photo Workshop run by the SAPF  a few weeks ago.  It was a 'Street Photography/Photojournalism' workshop and it was a lot of fun!

I have often admired other street photographer's images and was very glad to get the opportunity to try it myself, in the relative safety of a group workshop environment.

The day started with some basic practical instructions on camera settings and we learned about some of the 'greats' in Street photography, then we ventured out as a group into the City.

I hadn't been into the City since Mr Fixit retired from work over 5 years ago and quite a few things had changed ...... the thing that struck me the most was a lot of tall buildings had been built since I was last there .... and we are truly a multicultural city!

Whilst we were there primarily for 'street photography' I could not help but be drawn to some of the beautiful buildings that are now in our gorgeous city.

I will share some more images a bit later.  It certainly did the 'photo mojo' some good getting out and about with other photographers and the sun coming out in the afternoon to reveal these beautiful reflections made the cold early morning start all worthwhile.

If you are thinking about doing a course with SAPF, I can wholeheartedly say 'go for it!'  The course went over 1.5 days (1 full day Saturday workshop/outing, with an evening session held on the following Tuesday to share our images).  Morning Tea & Lunch was provided on Day 1, with coffee/tea available on the evening session.

Adelaide Icon - Popeye

I had a wonderful opportunity to go for a walk along the River Torrens yesterday - it was Mr Fixit's last day at work and I needed to fill in a few hours before we went on to his farewell lunch.

It was such a peaceful day - school holidays don't start until next week here in SA.  Another image for my 117 in 2017 & 52 in 2017 project.

The Popeye, is an Adelaide Icon - I have only ever been on it once when I was a child, and now that Mr Fixit is retired, I am hoping we will have the opportunity to do things like this a little more often.

Here is a little history about Popeye taken from their website :)

The “Popeye” boats are privately owned recreational ferries that operate on the lake between Elder Park and the Adelaide Zoo. The first boat was launched on the Torrens Lake by Gordon Watts in 1935. It was a 25-foot (7.6 m) boat, built on the banks of the River Torrens to hold up to 20 passengers and named Popeye 1.

Watts purchased a former Glenelg cruise boat in 1948 and placed it in service as Popeye 2. Over the next two years three new jarrah hulled boats were built at Port Adelaide; carrying 40 passengers each they were numbered Popeye 3 through Popeye 5.

Trips on the Popeyes from Elder Park to the zoo became a treasured family outing and the boats hosted weddings and other events.

In March 1962 Keith Altman, took over the Popeyes and introduced recreational paddle boats to the river. The Popeyes had a brush with royalty in March 1977 with Popeye 5 ferrying Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip followed by a choir in Popeye 4. Keith Altmann, ‘Popeye’ owner: “We turned one of the Popeyes into the Royal Barge. We took the hood off and put a platform up the back and the Queen and Duke sat back up there. That went off very well.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser officially launched three new fibreglass models named Popeyes I, II and III in 1982 as the wooden boats’ replacements.

In 2011, Tony and Lidija Shuman purchased the Popeye fleet and have worked tirelessly learning the ropes and hoping to make your experience an enjoyable and memorable event.

“Popeye brings a lot of memories back to people; especially the older generation bringing their children because they remember when they were kids their parents and grandparents used to take them up to the zoo on the boat.”

The Popeye is up there with the frog cake, the hills hoist and the Glenelg tram – they are all officially a State Heritage Icon.

UPDATE: Review of Becco on The Parade

some of you may recall I did a scathing review of Becco on The Parade last year.

Well, it was time to get our tax done again (yes, I know, we are late), so we took the opportunity to return and see if Becco had improved.

Are you back?  well that didn't take long did it?

here is my review for 2015:

The service has improved - with the staff being more on the ball, however, Mr Fixit's pizza was last again ............. arriving at our table 6 minutes after the other pizzas.

They got the drinks right for our table, but I observed some drinks being returned to the counter :(

The dessert I picked - German Apple Cheesecake - was absolutely beautiful, and yes, they remembered to take the plastic off before serving.

I was so pleasantly surprised, I actually forgot to take photos!

And just because I don't like a post without photos .............. here is a photo of a cappuccino made by yours truly!
